Following last month's climate change theoretical class and upcycling activity,

we had a class on making eco-friendly water bottle "Ooho"

and environmental QnA with Ok-hyeon Kim, environmental author.

Before making the Ooho, we learned about plastic.

The earth is known as the water planet, miracle planet, and blue planet.

But now it has a shameful nickname, a plastic planet.

Plastic, which was first developed to replace elephant ivory used for billiard balls,

is now used everywhere, such as clothing, food packaging, and furniture.

So far, 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced by humankind!

And even 330 million tons of plastic is thrown away every year.😢

It means that it takes five seconds to make plastic, five minutes to use,

and 500 years to decompose naturally.

After all, not a single plastic has been naturally decomposed since it was first invented.

In order to reduce the huge amount of plastic use,

the London Marathon, which used 920,000 plastic bottles in 2018,

reduced plastic waste by using a natural and edible water bottle called "Ooho" in 2019.

We experienced making "Ooho" that can reduce plastic

with the students from Bakmun Girls' High School!

Ooho, is an eco-friendly water bottle

which is a layer made of calcium alginate and naturally decomposes within six months.

You can even eat the layer, so no waste is produced.

Also, as the ingredient is from seaweed,

it is good for discharging waste and suppressing blood-sugar levels.😃

Even though the process of making Ooho was a little difficult,

the students made it one by one!💧💧💧

This is Ooho made if driving water. Isn't it pretty like a drop of water?

If you add juice, you can made a colored Ooho.

It was time to make fun memories, and experience the eco-friendly water bottle, Ooho.

After making the Ooho, we had a QnA time with OK-hyeon Kim

an environmental author who wrote "New Milestones in the Age of Climate Change"!

"Why did the number 1.5℃ come out?" asked the author, and he replied,

"It was originally 2℃, but through the IPCC meeting every one agreed to lower it for the earth"

The students listened carefully to the message the author gave,

"practice is important to prevent climate crisis."

A student that participated the class said,

"When I grow up and become an adult, environment will be important anywhere."

By making Ooho and QnA with the environmental author,

the students have learned that our practice is important for the earth!

Through today's green school activity,

we hope the students of Bakmun Girls' High School will become environmental leaders

who will make the earth a blue planet rather than a plastic planet!
