ESTABLISHMENT OF GREEN SCHOOL

Do you know the reason why Baek Ji-won, the 15-year-old girl, worried about Kiribati the Pacific island nation?
Kiribati is the island located on the Pacific. The highest place of this small country which has 110,000 people is only 2 meters above sea level.
When the sea level rises due to global warming, the people of Kiribati worry about their life and death.
If the global village doesn’t reduce CO2 emission, Kiribati cannot help but sink into the sea and all residents will become climate refugees.
The opportunity that Beak Ji-won who belongs to Daemyeong Middle School located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul heard about the situation of Kiribati for the first time was given through Green School Inaugural Ceremony which is sponsored by Green Start and organized by Daejayon.

Daejayon Green School is a green education and practice which is composed of middle and high school students. The purpose is that youth should have a lot interests in the environment in the future, prepare and make an effort.

On that day, Daejayon explained what are changing rapidly due to global warming and how they come to us as disasters through Green School seminar.
Through this opportunity Baek, who regarded the climate change as the adults’ and scientists’ problem, realized the importance of environment and fear of environmental disasters which we can face within 10 years.

After the seminar, Baek said “I’m so sorry that people of Kiribati have suffered from these disasters caused by us. As a vice-president of this school, the president and the whole students including me will try our best to mitigate global warming by practicing the “10-point program of Little Daejayon.”

Not only Baek but also other students consider environmental problems, worrying people of Kiribati through “Daejayon Green School.”
After Guryong Middle School (located in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam-gu / the president Hwang Se-ha), this month 12th, the whole students of Daemyeong Middle School participated in Green School.
And July 15th, Daecheong Middle School (located in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu / the president Shin Chun-hee) followed them.
“Green Early Education” has started in Gangnam, Seoul where English early education had boomed.

The reason why Daejayon, which has acted with domestic and foreign Universities as the central figure, came to middle schools, getting out of campuses is that the youth also have to be green leaders who are able to protect their future that they will live in.
So as to realize this, Daejayon selected three middle schools located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul as “Green School” by being supported by the Ministry of Environment and managed the clubs “Little Daejayon” in each school.
Daejayon prepared to start green practice for the youth themselves.

The first goal of “Little Daejayon”, composed of 30~40 students, is to make their school “Green School” by “reducing energy in school.”
Green School members take actions to turn off the light of empty classrooms or the faucets.

Daejayon is preparing various programs to let Little Daejayon keep green practices.
Two green leaders take charge of each school, carrying out various campaigns and seminars, and sharing the result measured how much energy is saved, caused by green practice of “Little Daejayon.”
Through these processes, Little Daejayon will be located in the center of environmental leaders’ organization which mainly composed of the youth.

Kim Yong-gap the president of Daejayon said “When our little effort and practice gather, we can save people who are suffering from the environmental disasters” about starting Green School movement.
In order to maintain it, at first the youth should conduct green practice with environmental awareness.
