Do you know the components of gas that emitted by automobile? And how the components have an impact on global warming and human body?

The composition of automobile exhaust gas is carbon monoxide(CO), nitrogen oxides(NOx), hydrocarbons(HC), particulate matter(particulate matters;PM), ozone(O3), carbon dioxide(CO2), sulfur dioxide(SOx), formaldehyde(aldehyde), peroxide the nitric acid (PAH), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).

Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect because it has no color, odor, taste, and irritation on the skin or mucous membranes. Carbon monoxide has 300 times higher affinity of hemoglobin compared to oxygen, and so it causes tissue hypoxia and inhibition of oxygen-carrying action. In addition, it causes loss of thinking and cognition ability, poor reflexes, sleepiness, angina, unconsciousness, and death. More than 80% of the emissions of carbon monoxide are automobile and transportation sectors.

Particulate matter mainly means carbon particles, but it also contains large amounts of dissolved organic matters and leads. Thus, Particulate matter easily inhaled to the respiratory system, and so it causes a variety of respiratory diseases, and lung cancer.

Ozone is the main culprit of photochemical smog, and it causes inflammation on mucous membranes, coughing, choking, damage to the mucous membranes, etc.

Carbon dioxide is the most serious thing. Carbon dioxide is a main culprit of global warming. Now research on how to reduce carbon dioxide is in progress. For example, there is a research that compresses the carbon dioxide, and put it into the lipid layers in order to reduce the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Oceanographers are also researching about the way how we could reduce it. The example is compressing the carbon dioxide in the deep sea or using marine organisms.

Today, however, the most realistic measure we can do is to reduce its emissions by using less fuel.

Daejayon made citizens and students aware the crisis of global warming and urged them to respond climate change actively by hold a booth such as making a commemorative button, face painting, panel exhibition on climate change, writing my green practices message, etc.
