We were invited to a waste and pollution lecture in HCT Women's College,
part of sustainability course.
Our topic was about plastic pollution, ocean pollution, how long before its gone,
plastic waste problem in the UAE, e-waste, where does our waste go,
and incineration and recycling.
We, human beings, cause plastic pollution.
It's a big significant issue worldwide, and most plastic waste is from
plastic cutlery, water bottles, plastic bags, and so much more.
Ocean pollution
90% of the plastic we used is floating now in the ocean, and the experts warned
"By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans."
How long before it's gone?
We've learned how many days or years do some of the items break down.
It takes six weeks for a newspaper to dissolve, cardboard takes two months,
plastic bags 20 years, Styrofoam 60 years, plastic bottle 450 years and so much more.
How about the plastic problem in UAE?
A typical UAE resident uses 450 plastic water bottles on an average in a single year,
11 billion plastic bags are used annually in UAE
according to statistics from the UAE's Ministry of Environment and Water.
Of course, that affects the wildlife in UAE, such as camels and other animals.
Where does our waste go?
Our debris is gone to the landfills, and when dumps are full, they end up at the ocean.
This lecture taught us so many new information,
more about our footprint in UAE, and so much more!
We are all glad to be one of the students who attended. :)
